Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada December 2014 And 2014 Year End

2014 Audi Q3
Canadian sales of compact luxury crossovers jumped 81% in 2014 thanks to the arrival of new competitors for the BMW X1. Those competitors, the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, arrived in the second half and, as the year progressed, had a negative impact on the popularity of the BMW X1.

These are certainly not the most popular luxury utility vehicles, however. Move up a notch or two in terms of size and price and youll find numerous vehicles which outsold the whole small trio. (Granted, two-thirds of the trio didnt have a full year.) The Acura RDX and MDX, Audi Q5, and Lexus RX all generated more than 6000 Canadian sales in 2014.

As for the RX, its 7913-unit total made it the countrys top-selling premium brand SUV/crossover, just 51 sales ahead of the Audi Q5.

The RX was joined by a smaller Lexus crossover in December, the RAV4-related NX. 296 NXs were sold last month, a figure which didnt have a tremendous impact on the RXs total. RX sales slid just 0.3%, or two units, to 570 units.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page. These tables are now sortable, so you can rank luxury SUVs and crossovers any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

GCBC isnt here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains youll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.

Barely.

Americas core group of volume-brand midsize cars combined for a 1% improvement in 2014, equal to a scant 27,245-unit improvement.

But Americas favourite midsize cars - their favourite cars, full stop - earned greater market share as their sales increased at a far quicker rate. The best-selling Toyota Camry was up 5% to 428,606 units, the Camrys highest total since 2008. Americas second-best-selling car, the Honda Accord, was up 6% to its highest total since 2007. Nissan set an Altima U.S. sales record with a 5% year-over-year gain. The fourth-ranked Ford Fusion was up 4%; the fifth-ranked Hyundai Sonata jumped 7%.

Combined, those five top sellers were up 5% to 1,676,420 units in 2014, increasing their share of the midsize market to 69% from 66% in 2013.

Chevrolet Orlando Discontinued In Canada No 2015 Model Year Orlando

GM Canada will not market a 2015 model year Chevrolet Orlando. The MPV was initially brought to Canada in the latter part of 2011 to take on the Mazda 5, Kia Rondo, and even front-wheel-drive Dodge Journeys, but it has been discontinued.

• Historical Monthly & Yearly Chevrolet Orlando Sales Figures
• Complete Canadian Minivan Sales Figures: 2014 Year End

Initially, the Orlando was a successful Canadian venture. 2012 volume climbed to 7199 units, more than the Rondo or 5 managed that year. But the Orlandos decline was then both sudden and sharp: Orlando sales slid 68% in 2013 and plunged a further 43% in calendar year 2014.

I was prompted to inquire with General Motors after noticing that especially abrupt decreases in the fourth-quarter of 2014 were followed up by the nameplates two lowest-volume months ever in January and February 2015: only 16 were sold in January; only 4 in February. GM Canadas product communications manager, George Saratlic, confirmed last night via email, "2014 was the last model year for the Chevrolet Orlando in Canada. There will not be a 2015 model."

The Orlando no longer exists on Chevrolet.cas main page, although you can enter the Build And Price section and select a 2014 Orlando from the dropdown as of today. Finding one at a dealer will be a much more difficult task, as it was for much of the last 18 months or more.

The Orlando was never imported to the United States where the market for new vehicles is nine times stronger. The Kia Rondo had already been extinguished. Mazda USA has since decided that they wont be continuing with the 5, either. The news of the Orlandos Canadian cancellation was posted elsewhere - at least on Manitoba GM dealer West Park Motors website - on a prior date.

Minivan Sales In Canada December 2014 And 2014 Year End

2015 Dodge Grand Caravan red SXT
64% of the minivans and an even more impressive 72% of the "full-size" minivans sold in Canada in 2014 were Windsor, Ontario-assembled Dodge Grand Caravans and Chrysler Town & Countrys. 85% of the FCA-built twins sold in Canada were Grand Caravans.

Minivan sales improved in Canada in 2014, but the category as a whole lost market share. (The oxymoronically-named full-size minivan subset grew at a slightly faster rate than the overall industry, thus increasing market share.) 5.1% of the new vehicles sold in Canada in calendar year 2014 were minivans and small MPVs, down from 5.2% in 2013.

The smaller trio of products certainly suffered as Chevrolet Orlando volume tumbled 43% and sales of the still-fresh second-generation Kia Rondo surprisingly slid 12%.

But the bigger vans were more common this year than last, increasing their collective total by 5856 units despite the loss of the forgettable Volkswagen Routan and the Nissan Quest and slightly slower Toyota Sienna volume through much of the year.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page. This table is now sortable, so you can rank minivans any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.
