2012 Toyota GT 86 Sport Car Review

The GT 86, the first sports car produced by Toyota in around ten years, has officially been unveiled. It was shown to around 20,000 people at Japan’s Fuji Speedway. The Toyota GT 86 is the production version of the Toyota FT-86 2+2 coupe. With a highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the car’s mechanical elements.

The GT 86 is a rear-wheel drive car that’s been designed to embody the essence of driving enjoyment. It features the world’s first horizontally opposed D-4S engine, combining a Subaru ‘boxer’ engine with Toyota’s D-4S direct injection technology. As well all know the car was developed in conjunction with Subaru, which will launch its own version dubbed the BRZ.

The engine is installed front mid-ship to create an ultra-low center of gravity and low inertia. In fact, its 475-millimeter center of gravity is the lowest of any volume production car currently on the market. The engine displaces 2.0-liters and its redline is 7,500 rpm with maximum output of 197 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 pound-feet of torque at 6,600 rpm.

The powertrain is matched to the world’s most compact four-seat design to create a car that benefits from light weight, low inertia and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power-to-weight ratio. For the driver that means lively, accessible performance and dynamic character with minimal intrusion from electronic systems.
