Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada October 2014

Every big flagship luxury SUV posted significant year-over-year Canadian sales increases in October 2014, from the Range Rovers 41% boost to the Lincoln Navigators 257% leap forward.

The Civics little brother, meanwhile, recorded a 60% year-over-year increase in October to end the month as Canadas 11th-best-selling car. Year-to-date, however, the Fit sits in 19th place. Its top-selling rival, the Hyundai Accent, is Canadas seventh-best-selling car overall, and three subcompacts – the Accent, Rio, and Versa – have outsold the Fit in 2014.

Mercedes-Benzs 14% improvement, though sounding less impressive, translated to 28 extra October sales for the GL-Class, a greater volume increase than the ones achieved by the Cadillac Escalade family, the Range Rover, Lexus LX570, and Mercedes-Benzs own G-Class.

But lest you think these vehicles are visible on every street corner, remember that theyve only accounted for 0.9% of the SUVs and crossovers sold in Canada this year, a figure which rose to 1.1% in October, specifically.

In August 2014, GM Cadillac sold 52 more Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs compared with August 2013. Mercedes-Benz Canada sold 62 fewer GL-Class SUVs.

The August 2014 GL sales total contined to be extraordinarily high, however, as the GL outsold the whole Escalade, the Range Rover, and the Lexus LX570 combined. 

The GL competes for market share in a showroom full of other utility vehicles. Mercedes-Benz sold 14 upper-crust G-Wagens in August in addition to 321 GLKs and 509 MLs. (The GLA is arriving now from Europe.) In addition to the 97 Escalades sold last month, Cadillac sold 344 SRXs. That is all. 

Through the first two-thirds of 2014, Cadillacs car story in Canada has been very different compared with its performance south of the border: Canadian Cadillac cars are up 18%. But August was a poor month, as the ATS, CTS, ELR, and XTS combined for a 6% decline.

With an utterly massive lineup - B, C, CLA, CLS, E, S, SL, SLK, SLS - Mercedes-Benzs passenger cars were up 10% to 1500 units last month, 83% more sales than the whole Cadillac division.

Large Luxury SUV Sales In America November 2014 YTD

Americans registered 75% more Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs in November 2014 than in November 2013 to go along with 88% more Lincoln Navigators, 32% more Mercedes-Benz G-Wagens, 16% more Toyota Land Cruisers, and 5% more Mercedes-Benz GLs.

Combined, thats a gain of 2392 sales for these full-size behemoths during a month in which, according to Automotive News, passenger car sales declined by more than 400 units. Thats telling.

At Cadillac, the Escalade breakdown included 2106 regular-wheelbase SUVs, 1128 long-wheelbase ESVs, and three lingering Escalade EXTs. Lincoln doesnt provide a breakdown for the Navigator and aptly named Navigator Long. We made that up, its the aptly Navigator L. Which stands for Long. Or Lengthened. Or Leggy. Definitely not Lessened.

Canadian sales of big sedans from volume brands are down 22% in 2014. June wasnt quite as bad as the overall first half, but last months 18% decline represented 474 fewer sales.

Chrysler and Dodge combined to own nearly half the category as 300 sales increased 18%. Kia added one Cadenza sale. Sales of the new, distinctly more premium Hyundai Genesis sedan nearly tripled.

But the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus, Nissan Maxima, and Toyota Avalon all posted declines of at least 32%. These would be more major losses had sales of those cars not already been rather low. 

Buick, for example, only sold 137 LaCrosses back in June 2013. LaCrosse volume is 40 times stronger in the United States, where the auto market is only nine times bigger.

Incidentally, a number of other full-size luxury SUVs are on the upswing, as well, with February 2015 sales of the Escalade and its challengers rising 43%. Overall SUV/crossover sales were up 9% last month. Even the fast-rising Audi Q5 class of small luxury utilities, rising 40% in February, didnt grow at as fast a rate as these beastly brutes.

The  February exceptions stem from Toyotas twins, the Land Cruiser and Lexuss LX570. Combined, they only lost 43 sales compared with February 2014.
